Advisories The ITL Experience Survey Report
The ITL Experience Survey Report presents the findings of a national survey examining the lived experiences of internationally trained lawyers (ITLs) in Canada.
The survey project, led by Kenny Okunola (President and Co-founder, ITL Network), was developed to better understand the experiences of ITLs navigating the pathway to licensure, employment and professional integration within the Canadian legal profession. It explores key stages of the ITL journey, including accreditation, articling, employment, workplace integration and professional inclusion.
The findings highlight recurring themes, particularly challenges related to securing articling positions, recognition of international legal experience, access to professional networks and long-term career advancement. While many internationally trained lawyers build successful careers in Canada, the survey suggests that structural barriers continue to affect pathways to professional integration for some candidates.
The report is intended to contribute to ongoing dialogue among regulators, employers and other stakeholders on how pathways for internationally trained lawyers can continue to evolve within the Canadian legal profession.
